Many of the experiences on offer at Scenic World are unique to this part of New South Wales, and can be found nowhere else on Earth. This means that you’re entering the record books every time you visit.
Established in 1945, the family-owned business occupies prime real estate in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains. The views here extend to the Three Sisters and across canyons, and the attractions make the most of the outlook.
On the Scenic Railway, jump aboard the world’s steepest passenger train, travelling from the escarpment down 310m into the forest on a 52-degree rail incline. At the base, a web of hiking trails explore the Jamison Valley rainforest. Take the train’s return trip, or catch the 545m Scenic Cableway back to the top.
For an even more vertiginous experience, sign up for the Scenic Skyway, which glides between clifftops 270 metres above the valley floor. Yes, birds will fly below you.
If you want to set your heart racing, try the Beyond Skyway experience: you clip into a harness, open a hatch, and climb onto the roof of the Skyway to enjoy sunset colours. On the return voyage, there’s champagne to toast your bravery.
Part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, the Three Sisters is an iconic formation best seen from Echo Point lookout, on the edge of the plateau above.
These three weathered sandstone peaks formed thousands of years ago through erosion, are set among the cliffs of the Jamison Valley. From the lookout, you’ll be able to see the Ruined Castle and Mount Solitary.
With so many sights to see in the Blue Mountains, the Explorer Bus makes it easy to tick off all the must-see landmarks in one easy go. Forget about driving, sit back and enjoy the scenery and the commentary on board this big red double-decker bus that takes in the most important sights of Katoomba and Leura. There are 37 stops included, so you can hop on and hop off whenever you please, and buses run every 45 minutes every Saturday.
Stop off at a clifftop lookout or an enticing restaurant, at Scenic World or at the start of a hiking trail. There are a range of different passes to suit every traveller and budget. Take a short-and-sweet one-hour tour for those who want to get their Blue Mountain bearings, exploring the Great Dividing Range, Mount Solitary, the Three Sisters, Leura and more (free guide book included). Or level up your expedition to include entry to attractions like Scenic World, as well as a meal.
If you’re fond of magnificent views, famous lookouts, and iconic scenery, then look no further than Prince Henry Cliff walk, in Blue Mountains National Park. Following the cliff edge from Katoomba Cascades to Gordon Falls, near Leura, this moderate walking track boasts some of the best views in NSW.
Passing several unique hanging swamps, take a look at the variety of sedges, rushes and grasses. In summer, you may see the beautiful yellow and gold flowers of Christmas bells. With over 20 lookouts offering magnificent views of Jamison Valley and three waterfalls, this track is a visual delight at any time of year.
From Echo Point lookout, you’ll see the iconic Three Sisters. Pick and choose the length of your walk, picking up the track at various lookouts along Cliff Drive. Unroll the picnic blanket when you’ve found the perfect spot and enjoy a picnic lunch with a million-dollar view.
The 1.3 kilometre walk gives visitors access to a unique, night-time viewing experience of outstanding natural features such as Orphan Rock, Witches Leap, Katoomba Falls and Katoomba Cascades. At certain vantage points you can also see the Three Sisters lit up.
The experience connects other previously lit areas, and has new lighting from the top of the Katoomba Falls Kiosk car park, around Reid’s Plateau and down to the Duke and Duchess lookout.
All the lights turn on at dusk and flood lights are turned off at 10.30pm and path lights at 11pm.
A challenging walk between Echo Point to Scenic World via the Giant Stairway. Enjoy awe-inspiring views from Echo Point lookout before descending into the valley over more than 800 steel and stone steps. The steps were originally forged in 1909.
Keep an eye out for amazing native flora and astounding native wildlife in the bush of the Blue Mountains. Along the way, marvel at the Three Sisters from the floor of the Jamison Valley, stroll past Federal Pass and travel past the cascading beauty of Katoomba Falls to popular tourist attraction Scenic World.
