The Carrington Hotel’s remarkable ‘antiquated’ lift remains in operation to this day and is a fascinating piece of history.
The lift was manufactured and installed by the Otis Elevator Company during Sir James Joynton Smith’s ownership of the hotel. A recently obtained copy of the layout drawing confirms installation occurred at the close of 1927, or early 1928.
The lift controller has been upgraded but the motor is original. The internal doors were upgraded for safety, now operating automatically. The external door still operates manually, in much the same manner as back in the day.
